DERROCHE (SQUANDER)

DERROCHE This first phase of the residence is an artistic research that explores the intersection between the BODY and the VOICE, dance and music on the stage. Based on the musical genre of SAMBA, I seek to create songs that are developed in a scenic concert that explores the themes of LOVE and VIOLENCE, the ABUSE and the SQUANDERING, as well as the figure of the EXTRANGE. The body is conceived as a historical archive that carries individual and collective memories, making it the axis of this performative exploration. DERROCHE is the third work that closes my TRILOGY of MATERNITY.

Why DERROCHE?

DERROCHE is born out of the contradiction between excess and lack, between vital impulse and wastage. To squander is to give without measure, not to restrain, not to limit, not caring (for oneself). It is to give oneself up to exhaustion, up to dissolution. In love, in passion, in motherhood, in self-giving to others, we women have often been educated to squander ourselves, to empty ourselves into the other, without reserve. But squandering is also an act of resistance: an overflowing energy that defies the norm, that breaks the limits and becomes exuberance, pleasure, radical expression.

Àfrica Martínez Ferrín is a performing arts maker with a degree in Choreography from the Theatre Institute of Barcelona. Dancer, singer and founder of the company and performing arts centre La Colmena de Àfrica, based in Conil de la Frontera (Cádiz), she develops her work from a profound investigation of the body, the voice and the stage.

Since the creation of her company in 2019, Àfrica has conceived several pieces in which the search for hybrid and contemporary stage languages excels. Her creative process always starts with the body and the voice as essential motors, from which music, text and new forms of dramaturgy emerge.

Her most recent work, MéDIUM, is the second instalment of the Trilogy of Maternity, which began with VICKY, a sort of Victoria, and which will culminate with the third piece currently in the process of creation: DERROCHE.
